I thought it might help you to list some of the different fox furtails stocked by foxy-tails.co.uk and their characteristics. Foxy-tails also stock fox masks, plate (body fur) mink tails and bucktails as available.

Fox Types:

Shadow Fox

Shadow Fox has less under fur and nice long soft hairs. The whites are excellent tails for dyeing and produce bright vivid colours….
It is a premium grade and commands higher prices at the fur auctions..it is also getting more difficult to obtain.
Tail Length: Average 14 to 17 inch
Hairs: 3 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: very soft (dyeing does not seem to affect the texture as with Blue Fox)

Blue Fox

Blue Fox has darker guard hairs and has thicker under fur, which I understand many use for dubbing. The hair is slightly thicker than the Shadow
The Blue Fox is more commonly supplied by retailers as medallions or packs.
Tail Length: Average 14 to 17 inch
Hairs : 3 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Thicker than Shadow and can be a little crinkly.

Marble Fox

Marble Fox:
This is a fox that has been little used in fly tying but is certainly one growing in popularity.
The tails are extremely large and predominately white with some Black to Silver shading. It has less underfur more like the Shadow in texture and superb for dyeing.
Because its white it will dye to good vivid colours
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : to 4.5 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Soft straight hairs.

Platinum Fox

Platinum Fox:
Another large tail…like a Silver Fox but the tail is lighter grey, silver and white..with white tip
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : 4.5 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Soft crinkly with moderate under fur in whitish grey.

Dark Blue Frost Fox:

Dark Blue Frost Fox:
Another large tail…Colouring darker than the platinum fox silver to black with large white tip
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : 4.5 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Soft firm straight hair thicker under fur in whitish grey.

Silver Fox:

Silver Fox:
The Colour shades from Silver to Black with a white tip. Under fur is light grey/white.
Silver Fox dyed Black is a very popular fur for the larger flies. Silver fox can also be dyed to other colours but they remain predominately black and the hairs that take colour are always a darker tone
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : To 4 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Soft straight hairs.

Golden Island Fox:

Golden Island Fox:
Another large tail…In furrier terms the rolls Royce of fur..Colouring creamy caramels and silvers
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : 4.5 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Soft fine straight hair not heavy under fur in whitish grey.

Hope that all helps….
